More Original Equipment Manufacturers to produce Windows Phones

Announcements made at Mobile World Congress ( MWC ) in Barcelona, Spain indicate Windows Phone will be manufacctured by 13 more OEMs. The list follows: Nokia, Samsung, HTC  Huawei Additional OEMs to manufacture mobile devices with Windows OS Foxconn, Gionee (New Delhi, India), JSR, Karbonn Mobiles, Lava (Xolo), Lenovo, LG, Longcheer (Shanghai) and ZTE This is going to be interesting. Manufacturing based in China and India would provide very healthy competition which is going to be tough. India's own Askash phones may also join (speculation) in this group which appears to be android based. With so many new vendors and the vast population who are already very mobile, this market is going to grow and Microsoft will see better times for its Phone OS.

Forget about Cable TV get Aereo

Image
How much do you pay for watching TV over the cable?  How many channels they offer and how many of them do you really watch or really want?  Are the fees they charge reasonable considering what you want and what they offer?  What about channels they offer and charge for them? You want to get away from the Cable TV guys? Here is your chance. Well, Aereo will at least make it lot cheaper for the users. It may not offer 3 to 400 channels (very few useful or the ones you care to watch) but the price is very good, about 8 to 10 times lower. It is only available in some cities now but spreading rapidly. I guess it will take a long time to reach the Hawaiian Islands. The cable companies are not keeping quite and the battle appears to be raging and reaching the  highest legal  levels . This following quote is from  Bloomberg  regarding this case: "The justices yesterday agreed to hear an appeal by media companies including Walt Disney C...

LG G Flex the World's first curvaceous smart phone from LG

Image
Priced at around $672.00 LG's LG G Flex - G series phone is World Number 1 curved smart phone. It has (deformable) 6" HD Display and that is how you get the immersive & cinematic viewing experience True-to-life colors like in most of the recent phones 13 MP camera to snap up crisp images and videos. Thanks to organic LED screen you can bend it. I have to wait and see if bending makes for an immersive experience. It is ergonomic. It has self-healing paint and that should take care of bend/unbend operations and I am not sure how many of such bends. Here are some screen shots and of course a Video from the LG Site embedded in this post. The video is here:

I bought the <$50 UbiSlate from Datawind

Image
I just unpacked my UbiSlate 7Ci tablet. I switched on and the 'android' logo came up rather quickly. It can be used for communications if you have a WIFI available. Getting on to WiFi was also easy, what was not easy is the WEP password which is rather long (not the fault of Ubi).  It has quite a few built-in apps and more can be downloaded.  It also has a port for extra memory.  It is charged by a USB cable powered by the mains energy (110V).  It has two browsers, Chrome and Ubi proprietary and both worked well. Here are some specifications: •1GHz Cortex A8 processor •512MB RAM •OS : 4.0.3 Android •7″ inches Capacitive TouchDisplay •4GB of internal memory •Wi-Fi •180 minutes on a single charge. •language including Hindi, Marathi, Tamil & Other

Transfer albums from iPad, iPhone etc effortlessly

Image
Sometimes you need to transfer photos or albums from your iPad to your Windows PC. You can find a number of Apps on Apple Store to do this. Most of them use some form of connectivity with WiFi being the most popular. Unfortunately you end up spending time reading manuals or troubleshooting information. Here is the easiest way of doing without downloading any APP but using the stuff you already should be having. There is only one step in this procedure: Y ou do not need anything other than what you should be having . Hook your iPad (firmware 7.0.4) connector's USB end to the Windows OS (Windows 7 x64 Ultimate)  computer's USB Drive (assume that the other end is connected to iPad). The Windows computer recognizes the connection and now click Start | Computer and you should be able to see your Apple iPad as shown. If you open the DCIM folder that is displayed when you double click Apple iPad in the above it will be empty. After sometime you get an iPad mess...

Do not get into two year contracts, avoid them like plague

I cannot but echo the sentiments of John Legere, CEO of T-Mobile when he said, "Carriers have counted on staggered contract end dates and hefty early termination fees to keep people bound to them forever. But now families can switch to T-Mobile without paying a single red cent to leave them behind".  May be you should take up T-Mobiles offer detailed here: "T-Mobile offers to pay termination fees" In my experience with AT & T, my two year contract has been a pain point with their poor phone (made by Samsung) and their not so supportive support staff. I am just itching to get out of the two year contract ending February. The phone battery was a trash which never functioned except for about a year. Now it works only if it is hooked to wall plug. See here details:   http://hodentekmobile.blogspot.com/2013/07/this-samsung-phone-battery-was-trash.html I only use the alarm function (as I make very few calls) these days and use my wife's Nokia phone for ...
