Create Windows and Windows Phone Apps easily with App Studio

Image
Aloha Microsoft has made it easy to create Apps for windows with a large number of templates to choose from. Your limit is your imagination. In the early days of Internet web site development there were many sites offering free web sites  based on templates. You could sign-in and create a web site with a few pages sprinkled with some images and with some basic formatting tools all under 15 minutes. I created one during those days which is still alive:   http://www.angelfire.com/vt2/hodentek/ App Studio provides a similar user experience albeit lot more sophisticated with much tighter integration with Microsoft's Visual Studio tying up both windows 8.1 development and Windows Phone 8.1 development by intelligently sharing resources. It's two birds with one stone scenario. The journey for this App development starts here: http://appstudio.windowsphone.com/?stay=1 There are preliminaries like having a Microsoft account; having a computer with Windows 8.1 OS (Window...

Arduino 101: Programming with Visual Studio 2015 Community Update 2

Image
How can I program Arduino 101 board using Visual Studio? It is not very difficult. You need to use the right tools. If you rather not use Visual Studio 2015, you could also use the program from Arduino . But Visual studio does lot more than Arduino Program. Follow these steps. Step 1: First thing you need to have is the correct version (if you follow my advice) of Visual Studio. Get the Visual Studio 2015 Community (What I have is the same but with Update 2). If you do not have, no problem. Read this post . Step 2: For Arduino to work with Visual Studio 2015 Community (VS2015C), you need to install the Arduino Extensions for Visual Studio. A default install of VS2015C does not have the 'hooks' to create a Arduino Project. You will not find it in the ' New Project... ' templates. You need to install the Arduino Extension for Visual Studio 2015. You can get an idea how to do it by following this Swaytorial : Step 0: Of course you need to buy t...

Visual Studio 2015 for Mobile applications

Image
Visual Studio is a great piece of software. It's higher end versions are quite expensive but Microsoft has a lower end free version, Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Community which is free. It is well suited for mobile applications on tablets and smart phones. Do not think for a moment this is just for Windows Phone, you can develop cross-platform apps with it. If you want a app with a database backend, you have two options, SQLite and Indexed DB, one in relational and the other is non-relational. It is very easy to have SQLite on Visual Studio 2015 Community. SQLite is also free. In order to work with this post or other Visual Studio related posts you look no further than my blogs. SQLite is a relational database well suited for mobile applications. SQLite was described in a previous post here. As the Internet of Things is the trending area on the Internet, SQLite with its no administration feature is well suited. It is also the relational database for smart devices, cell p...

What emulator with what version of Visual Studio 2017?

Image
This is not always clear. It took a while to figure out this thing. I had Visual Studio 2017 Version 15.5.4 and ran into some design time problems as described in my post. Following this question taking a suggestion from Stack Overflow, I installed Visual Studio 2017 15.5.6 skipping the suggested 15.5.5. It did help me to avoid the design time problem for a UWP project I was working on. I also updated it to version 15.5.7. When I tried to view my app on an emulator, I did not find an emulator having used the latest version of Visual Studio in the deployment configuration. . Earlier I did not have this is problem before the upgrade. Every time , I try to use an emulator to look at my app, I am lead to a Microsoft site for downloading an emulator. According to UWP Forum on MSDN, there is no hard and fast rule for, ' What emulator with What version of Visual Studio 2017 '. It is more to do with the version you are targeting and the build. You can find this kind of i...

Missing C# templates in Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2017, version 15.7.5

Image
Recently installed Visual Studio Community 2017 with the following details: Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2017  Version 15.7.5 VisualStudio.15.Release/15.7.5+27703.2042 Microsoft .NET Framework Version 4.7.03062  I tried to run a previously well designed project by loading the project and failed. I noticed a number of errors such as these: The UI elements can still be seen in the XAML view in the MainPage.xaml and the same elements in the MainPage.xaml.cs are getting to be unrecognized by red wiggly (does not exist in the current context). some fifty errors CS0103 error Also the CS1061 error that the MainPage does not contain a definition for 'initialize Component' accepting first argument of type 'MainPage' could be found. I could not fathom the reason and spent about 6 hours. Then I resorted to recreate the app from scratch by creating a new C# project and noticed that the C# language related templates were missing. I am not sue if my errors are re...

Cross-platform app development Visual Studio 2015 (XAMARIN)

Read the following to get an idea of cross-platform options: http://hodentek.blogspot.com/2014/07/cross-platform-app-development-part-1.html Review this regarding cross-platform app development and Xamarin connection: http://hodentek.blogspot.com/2014/07/cross-platform-app-development-part-1.html Review regarding XAMARIN: http://hodentek.blogspot.com/2014/01/master-c-and-become-universal-coder.html Now in Visual Studio 2015 CTP6 you have the Android app under New Project in C#. Workaround: UWP project with Visual Studio 2017 Community

Image
Visual Studio 2017 and accompanying Blend for Visual Studio are well suited tools for developing Universal Windows projects. There appears to be some hard-coding in the application (I tried the recommended Hello World) and after some goading managed to load the project correctly starting with a blank template for C#. The device size in Design is hard-coded and the drop-down to choose size is greyed out. The loaded project (Code and XAML) appears as shown. MainXAML_HW_1 The device size in the Design is hard-coded. The design has very little flexibility to do anything unless I manipulate via the XAML code. However it is possible to adjust if you use the Blend as shown. The same project is now open in Blend. MainXAML_HW_1 Pick the size in XAML and click Save All in File menu in Blend. MainXAML_HW_2 Smaller device is chosen here. MainXAML_HW_3 Now Open the same project in Visual Studio 2017 Community and you will see that the chosen size of device appe...

Multilingual support for Windows Phone 8.1

Image
Smart Phones are even more widespread then PCs because of their outstanding feature-mobility. Because of the combination of Phone plus computing abilities they are in thier own class pushing PCs to ever decreasing adoption. Microsoft entered late to this highly competitivee market. Windows Phones (presently Windows Phone 8 but soon to launch Windows Phone 8.1) are used worldwide and multilingual support is mandatory. The toolkit provides this much needed feature. The Mulitligual toolkit integrates with Microsoft Visual Studio Toolkit to provide translation support for Windows 8 Apps development and editor tools. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh465006.aspx The toolkit provides (from MSDN resources) the following: •Helps you manage resource changes and translation status during development. •Provides a UI for choosing languages based on configured translation providers. •Supports the localization industry-standard XLIFF file format. •Provides a pse...
